Our core beliefs

At Body Positive Alliance, we believe that:

  • Your body should not be the determinant of self-worth and self-perception

  • All of us deserve the same access to opportunities regardless of our size, race, ability, or gender

  • Everyone deserves to feel confident and comfortable in their bodies as they are

  • We do not believe that bodies that are white, able-bodied, cisgender, or thin are superior, worthier, or inherently healthier than any other bodies

Our values

Liberation

We use a social justice lens to approach body positivity and body politics. Forms of bias and prejudice that impact health and wellbeing can be structural, systemic, interpersonal, and internalized.

Education

We offer knowledge to individuals so that they learn and grow. Open discourse, activities in chapter meetings, implementing our anti-bias curriculum, social media posts, and organization-held events provide an encouraging, educational quality to our community.

Community

Through discussions and activities via chapter meetings, lesson plan execution, social media, and organization-held events, we provide a safe space to empower individuals.

Inclusivity

People, regardless of body type, gender, race, and ability deserve to feel confident, as well as represented through our organization’s messaging.

Our goals

  • Advocate for the acceptance of all bodies regardless of physical ability, size, gender, race, or appearance

  • Inspire individuals to cultivate a more positive mindset towards their body

  • Challenge our normative views of beauty and worthiness

  • Emphasize the appreciation and inherent dignity of the body over the physical appearance of bodies

  • Delegitimize the industries, institutions, and ideologies that induce suffering for profit and political gain

  • Address the ways the mainstream body-positive movement has failed women of color and how it can better serve black and brown women, trans, and non-binary people

  • Educate individuals on the current and historical oppressions of bodies that do not fit the white and thin ideal
